"Sage Chick" wins Ladies Overall National Championship using a loaner, "Custom" Coyote Cap M-97w-18. After the match, we did not have the heart to take the shotgun back, "Sage Chick" now owns that shotgun, forever. We learned recently that she also won Ladies overall championship at the SASS Regional, "Guns of August", with the same gun.
We are up to speed on laser engraving. No backlog !
We are also, upgrading our action work to include (at no extra cost), a process called "Damascening", which is jewelling of parts inside of CAS firearms.
The machine we use for this process is the exact one used by the real Coyote Cap, (our Dad and Grandfather) when he first started gunsmithing back in 1943.
Simply click on the left and right arrows in the upper right corner of the picture below, for a slide show of our work.
(Here's a small sample of what the insides look like after an action job, and some of our custom machining work.)

Our latest Invention - "The Cougers" (Ruger New Model Vaqueros turned into Colts)
This is a huge improvement to these firearms in smoothness and reliability.

"Cap" has added another invention to the "Top Gun Action" and this limits the gun to a Two Shot "Only" configuration, making the gun even more reliable when speed loading in CAS competitions. This is a totally internal modification and it can be removed very easily for the gun to be able to load the magazine tube once again.
If you would like this modification, call our offices or e-mail gunsales@coyotecap.com

The following is a partial explanation of Lasergraphic
Those of you whom do not know of Tom Barney and the outstanding work that he performs with a laser engraver, really need to see some of his workmanship first hand.
Tom did the majority of laser engravings for all those shotguns we donated over the years to help clubs with range improvements and also to benefit the SASS Scholarship Fund.
If your cowboy guns look just like all the others and you are worried about them being stolen (or accidentally exchanged for one without an action job), you need to personalize your guns with laser engraving.
It will also be very hard for a thief to "Fence" your stolen guns, because they have been personalized by

Please see our "used" guns page for a (HUGE) new listing of (OUTSTANDING) firearms. Please read on for the reason these guns are being sold !
A lot of you folks already know, our pard, "C.V. Curly Bill" (who has been with us here at Coyote Cap Gunworks from the start, 10 years ago), anyway, Curly has had major problems with his eye and an unbelievable amount of non-stop pain to go with it.
Very recently, Doctors gave him no choice but to have his eye removed, thus ending his competition shooting forever.
We are so sorry about this development, words alone fall hollow.
The complete listing of Curly Bill's guns, spurs, holsters, ammo, loading equipment, gun related library of books, (outstanding) knife collection, including some Damascus knives and leather holsters and belts is located on our used guns page.
A huge amount of these items are brand new and NEVER USED There will be an on-going process of selling everything for the next few weeks, so log back onto this website often to see what we have added.
Those of you wishing to purchase any of these guns, need to call "Coyote Cap" or "Southpaw Sully" (personally) at our office phone (507) 685-4500 or the shop 685-4511, for a full description of each firearm. There is no profit to us for selling these, as Curly sets his own prices and he is our friend.

We have a new invention to improve the patented "Two Shot System" on our M-87wcse-18 and M-87wse-20 models. This modification is another major (and patent pending) change, so that when in competition, you don't have to be so precise or so gentle while loading two shells at a time in the shotgun.
We call the modification, "Top Gun Action" and as of January 1, 2008, the modification comes as standard equipment with the purchase of one of our M-87wcse-18 models.
If you have already taken delivery of a new Special Edition, M-87 from Ahlmans in 2007, and you find a problem with it's operation, you may want to think about sending it back to to them under warranty. If it turns out that the gun has a defect, there will be no charge to you, including shipping.
++++++++++++++++++++++
However, if you want to upgrade the shotgun to it's fullest potential, Cap can do this on top of any free warranty work, should you decide to ship the gun to Cap instead.
If Cap does the work personally, he engraves "Coyote Cap Action" and the serial number of that modification to the left (inside) of the hammer to reflect your gun has had his personal attention.
When your shotgun is shipped back to you, it will look like a mirror inside and it will work exceptionally smooth and fast with little or no effort upon cycling the action.
+++++++++++++++
If you bought a standard M-87w-20 (from a Dealer), and it doesn't work correctly, you can send it to Interstate Arms Corp under warranty. OR, if you want the gun to operate to it's fullest potential, then please send the gun to us. We will have to tear the whole gun down to correct any warranty problems before we will install the "Top Gun Action".
The reason is because experience has taught us to never do something half way.
We charge $150 for the "Top Gun Action" work, plus $3 for testing ammunition.
When all the work is done, you will be notified of impending shipment and at that time, there will be an addition flat rate (nationwide) charge for re-packing, shipping insurance and UPS (ground) charge of $25.
+++++++++++++
Even though Cap has tried to retire, you can still call or e-mail him for all CAS firearm sales, Customizing and warranty work:

Western 3 Gun (W3G) and The National Congress of Old West Shootists (N.C.O.W.S) have put their blessings on our new M-93/97 shotgun to be used in their competitions.
These shotguns were built to improve through reliability, the sport of Cowboy Action Competition shooting. These guns are no faster to load or shoot, but where engineered simply to be stronger, safer and far more reliable for CAS competition.
The best statement to this fact was made on the SASS wire, and that statement said it all. The new M-93/97 is not a clone of the old Winchester M-93, nor a clone of the M-97 (which is only a re-named M-93), but rather, a "Hybrid". Simply the best of both.
There was an assumption that because the M-93/97 shotguns have a "Period Correct" open-top, stuck hull extraction design (same as John Browning designed it), that these guns could thus be faster to load.
This assumption has proven to be incorrect by several "Top Gun" shooters and also by those folks in N.C.O.W.S and W3G that have purchased one of our new M-93/97's and have used them in competition.
Advertising by IAC (the Importer of the M-93/97) that the new shotgun can be loaded faster, is a misunderstanding and thus has proven to be an incorrect statement.
Well thought out Safety and (Bullet Proof) Reliability by re-design were the driving force behind the M-93/97. It is much safer than any Winchester M-97 because of the total re-design of the gun.
Great effort was taken to improve the strength of the frames of the M-93/97, by having the factory provide thicker metal.
The actual size (metal to metal) of the loading port opening of the M-93/97, is exactly the same size as the thinner, M-97.
Also, the new M-93/97 was pressure tested by White Laboratories (in Chicago) to a massive 43,000 lbs, pressure, thus making this new M-93/97, most likely the strongest and safest pump shotgun to be specifically produced for Cowboy Action competitions.
However, only the M-97 (or clone) is allowed to be used in SASS sanctioned events. What we have built is not really an M-97, nor is it an M-93, but the best of both, but without all the safety and reliability problems of those old Winchester shotguns.
We thank those of you that have purchased one of these (1 of 200) M-93/97wcse-18 shotguns and we only hope that one day, these new shotguns will be approved for competitive use in SASS sanctioned events.
Because of the circumstances surrounding this latest shotgun, we doubt that any more will ever be built, and thus, these (200) are destined to become a collectors item.

Click HERE for a demonstration of the '87 two shot feeding system and Top Gun Mod in action. There are two cartridges in "Cap's" right hand and two in his left, (held under the forearm of the shotgun). There are several other techniques that can be put into play, and suffice to say, it only takes a bit of practice to perfect the style best suited for you. In further testing, it was found that to leave the lever loose (and not held with your hand), the left side of the carrier would fall (open) and the gun can be loaded with two shells much easier.
One proven faster method of loading two shells into the M-87wcse-18, is to place your thumb and finger just forward of the forearm, (around the mag tube and pulling back) with the palm of your hand under the forearm, thus allowing you to pull backward to hold the gun firmly to your shoulder.
This allows your other hand to reach for more shells, allows you to release the lever (to speed load two more shells) and also allows you to sight from target to target by looking right down the bore.
+
I.A.C. 1887 Lever action shotguns have also been proof tested by White Laboratories in Chicago to a very high pressure of over 43,500 lbs. and then the action would not unlock. They could not blow the shotgun up - - - it is a very safe shotgun.
Because pressure testing could not blow up our new shotgun, "John Q. Public" can use them for hunting and thus each is chambered for magnum (2-3/4") cartridges to be used.
IAC wanted to avoid any possibility of liability from someone over-loading the shotgun.
You folks that are LEFT handed 87 shooters, need to contact us about converting your 87 over to pitch the spent 12 ga. hulls out to the left and not the right, (as set up from the factory in Rizhao, China). The reason is that the hulls fly to the right and will strike you in the safety glasses unless converted.
I have set the cost for this conversion at $40

A while back, (before Mule Camp 06), I sent a small sampling shipment of firearms to a well known and very respected cowboy firearms writer, (who has written extensively about CAS firearms for the SASS Cowboy Chronicle). I sent him (5) new shotguns for his (unbiased) evaluation and testing of these shotguns.
That writer's name is "Capt. George Baylor".
To read "Capt George Baylor's" evaluations please go to the left "views" column.
We need to add this statement: The opinions expressed by the writer are his own and in no way did he receive advice on how to word his evaluations of each firearm.

We are sorry for the delay in shipment of your new shotgun. We have (to date) delivered over 900 shotguns this year, including standards and specials of all models, Pumps, Lever actions and Doubles. We have found it necessary to purchase and secure (in an underground vault) 200 guns at a time, then go through each gun for quality control prior to shipping. We really, really thank those of you with common sense and patience in my undertaking this task.
+
We've had a couple of 87 lever actions returned for failure of the lever to close on live ammo. Please remember in your box was a recommended ammunition for these guns. The reason is because of the design of a pivoting lever and bolt, the chamber to bolt headspace is critical in all the M-87's.
Winchester AA's allow for a .050 rim thickness, which is critical when a specific headspace is needed. Other brands of ammunition is .012 to .020 oversize, and thus can create a possible tight action, and a lever closure problem.
+
We have a some "05" M-87wse-20 models, and "06" M-87wcse-18 models with serial #'s belonging to people that ordered these guns (3) years ago. We need them to release the serial numbers, before we can sell them, so please call our sales office so we can release these guns for sale to someone else.
+
It has come to our attention that folks are removing the lever lock (safety) to make the lever unlock a lot easier
This is the wrong thing to do and voids your warranty.
There is a cure for this problem on my web page called "Gunsmithing Simplified".
Please be patient, we are going through each shotgun very carefully, to assure quality and reliability.
Those of you wishing to own one of the finest competition pump shotguns ever built, need only to make the call to us. The M-93/97wcse-18 will retail (with a full race action job) at about $699. We have taken every good idea out of both the 93 and 97, throwing out all the unsafe and unreliable parts and incorporated all (6) generational changes to the old Norinco and IAC 97's, plus every possible NEW innovation has gone into these new 7th. generation shotguns.
+
Please go to "Gunsmithing Simplified" for 87 updates.
Black Powder 87's, we have experienced problems in extraction. Please contact us about opening up your chambers to 11-7/8ga. prior to shipping. This should resolve sticking problems with PLASTIC cartridges. This would require an additional $40 labor charge to hone out the chamber.

Our new M-87wcse-18 shotguns have outstanding FORGED frames, well balanced 18-1/16" barrels, (3) Commemorative "Coyote Cap" (custom Trulock stainless steel) choke tubes (Coyote Cap, Cylinder, Modified and Extra Full) are included and a Coyote Cap engraved SS choke tube wrench, #4 bead, really nice American Walnut stocks, (from Missouri), slick actions, "Two Shot Feeding" systems (that work correctly and eject the last round reliably) Sporting Clays recoil pads at an L.O.P. of 12-1/2" installed correctly for Cowboy Action Shooting down to -4 degrees negative and very good Leather Lever Wraps, to keep from pinching your fingers in the pivot, and are correctly installed on our new Competition shotguns.

We're currently working on a new web page called "Gunsmithing Simplified," the title is taken from a book that Cap's Dad, (The real Coyote Cap) wrote a chapter in. The book is by H.E. The 1887 lever action shotgun project was not easy, nor in-expensive - - the wait will be worth it - - you will see.
+
+
Here are some important facts you need to know - - These new 1887 lever action shotguns and M-93/97 pump shotguns, are NOT all Chinese made. A lot of American workers went back to work, making parts for these shotguns.
The American Walnut stocks for all of the Chinese I.A.C. shotguns are coming from Missouri (about 35,000 were sent to China).
A large shipment of Pachmayr "Sporting Clays" recoil pads were sent to China to be installed on "Special Edition" models.
All of the "Win-Choke", choke tubes are a contract we have with Tru-Lock Corporation of Georgia. and each choke tube is laser engraved to depict each as a "Commemorative".
Manson Corp has supplied us with several complete sets of choke tube reamers and taps, chambering reamers and forcing cone reamers that were also sent to China.
All of the chambers in these shotguns are being cut with American made chambering reamers and forcing cone cutters.
The lettering and stamping tools were Made in America
Even the #4 large brass front sight beads are American Made
A huge shipment of Birchwood Casey Walnut stock stain and finish in 55 gal drums went to China for our shotguns.
Because the Chinese ship (5) guns to each box, we needed individual shipping boxes, which meant ordering boxes for all three models, the 99 doubles, the 97 pumps and now the 87 lever actions. I don't have the figures for all three shotgun models, however, there are pallets of American made shipping boxes being used for each shotgun to go to it's new owner
When you get right down to figuring out where all the money is going for these Chinese shotguns, we are putting a huge number of Americans to work - - from the UPS to Fed-Ex drivers and the postal office workers, Gun Dealers, Distributors, Ammo manufactures, printers and copiers, magazine editors and even the telephone and cell phone companies are making money.
When I was asked to go to China to sort out some problems, as a Viet-Nam Veteran, I had a real problem in that, and for more than two years I refused to go over there (for any reason).
After some hard thinking and serious questions to our Lord and maker, I was given the insight (vision actually) to pursue this project and put people to work, both here and in China.
I feel good about it !

Model 93/97wcse-18 project
+
Technical data !
For those reading this, the original model 1893 - - (later re-designed and called a model 1897), was taken over by Winchester from John Browning.
Winchester changed the configuration and then they had problems in the shell flag system that allowed a live round to turn sideways and the primer of that live round could be struck by the right extractor before the round had entered the chamber, thus discharging out-of-battery.
This fact, gave the M-93 a bad name, when in fact the gun as Browning had designed it, was safe.
After 32,334 of the 93’s were build, the numbers continued and the guns were re-named a model 97, starting with serial number 32,335.
The first Browning designed M-93's did not have an Alpha prefix, but when Winchester took over, there were a few thousand made with an (A) before the serial number, soon to be replaced (upgraded) by the (B) model and so on, through the (C), (D) and later the (E) models (re-named as an M-97)
All of those models started as a 93, not a 97.
What we created in our M-93/97 was to put back history to what the M-97 really is supposed to be and that is an M-93.
a period correct and very safe shotgun that was banned from SASS Sanctioned competitions, (without ever being tested), because of the excuse given that they THOUGHT it would be too fast !
We are up to the 7th
generation, and the result is called an M-93/97 and STILL making improvements.
The 93/97wcse-18 project has every upgrade possible and the gun is purely awesome, it is safe and a lot of fun to own and shoot. Our test 93/97wcse-18 has had hundreds and hundreds of rounds fed, fired, extracted and ejected, without so much as one mechanical hic-up.
This
says a lot for the safety upgrades, metallurgy improvements and attention to
detail in tolerances to make the guns safe, fun and very reliable.

OLD NEWS
A problem has developed with our 1887 "Coachgun", Double
barreled shotguns, that are being used in high humidity States.
The American Walnut buttstocks of this model are showing signs of
swelling under the side plates, and this is effecting the cocking and release of
the hammers. The side plates need to be removed, (very easy with only two screws
each side). Prussian Blue needs to be used to locate contact points on the wood
to remove the swelling.
I have posted my 2008 schedule on another page. Those clubs wishing my
participation and possible donation of a new shotgun to financially benefit
their club should go to that page.
Model 1887 Coachgun
(doubles)
These
Double Barreled Shotguns are a TRUE copy used by stagecoach
drivers and those riding "Shotgun".
These
Special Edition Shotguns have the letters Model 99 stamped on the left barrel
and the letters and words, 1887 Coach
Gun also stamped in 18k
Gold lettering on the barrels. The words Coyote
Cap 1887 Coachgun, are also engraved on the left side of the frame
in 18k Gold letters, just above
the triggerguard, as well as the serial #s in 18k.
The reason
for this is because these shotguns are a complete re-design of the old model 99.
The troublesome cross frame safety has been removed, and replaced with taller
"safety" hammers and an automatic rebound safety system.
The hammers
can be cocked very easily because they are a much taller "safety"
design, thereby eliminating the usual cross-frame safety with these safety
hammers. Also, the factory mainsprings in each new Coyote Cap 1887 Coachgun, are
factory tuned to allow much easier hammer cocking and rebound safety.
These new
shotguns also enjoy a change in design of the horizontal bolt and action
operating lever, in as much as these new 1887 coach guns can be opened with both
hammers fully cocked, over live ammunition.
The reason
for this modification is so that in a situation where both chambers are loaded
and the hammers fully cocked, the lever will clear the right hammer and the
action can be opened and the ammunition removed from the chambers and the gun
made safe, without having to violate a SASS Safety rule of lowering a cocked
hammer over live ammunition.
Should the
right hammer not allow the lever enough motion to unlock the barrels to removed
the live ammo, then both barrels must be fired. The rule only applies where both
the hammers would need to be manually lowered over live ammo.
These
shotguns are chambered for 3" magnum cartridges with super-long forcing
cones to reduce the recoil and the guns are more than very capable of handling
those shells.
Both of the
super-short 18" barrels have a cylinder bore constriction and will lay down
a field-of-fire shot pattern that measures 18" to 22" at 35'. These
guns were designed to be absolutely LETHAL and a very good shotgun
for home protection and Cowboy Action Shooters.
Model
1887wcse (lever action)
There is some discussion on building a clone of the Arnie
"Terminator" (or possibly a T-2) in
long mag tube configuration, and we would like some customer (and dealer)
feedback in this.
NEWS FOR THOSE
RECEIVING THEIR GUNS
To those receiving their new guns, please be
mindful of the packaging, as I have done everything possible to prevent damage
to the guns in UPS transit to you.
When the box gets to you, please notice which
end I have marked as "OPEN THIS END". There will be a box within a
box, and a really nice three color outer cover over the inner box.
The factory in China has placed the holding
glue too far over-lapping and this has caused a problem with taking the outer
cover off the inner box. Simply use a broom handle to slide down in between the
inner and outer box cover and this will break the seal free. It is an easy job,
so don't be concerned.
Also, when you open the box, please notice
the empty testing AA hulls that are wrapped inside the box. These were some
of the actual testing cartridges that I used and the reason for including them
is so that you can dry fire and test the functioning of the shotgun, right away
without having to go to the range.
Also, please notice that the hulls are AA
"Superfeatherlites". This is what our shotguns are
set up to use. To use any other cartridges in a match is to render the gun
unreliable, with heavier recoil. This is a pump shotgun and not an
autoloader, therefore the spent hulls have to be held tightly by the extractors
in order to be extracted from the chamber, rather then gas or recoil ejected.
The new 87's and 93/97wcse's are now (7) shot shotguns,
(one up the pipe and six up the tube), which never existed with an original
Winchester 87 or 93/97. I asked the factory supervisor to change the design
of the carriers, mag tubes, followers and mag tube springs to increase the mag tube
capacity in each shotgun.
Side matches and team shoots are a hoot now !
ATTACHMENTS AND VIRUSES
Notice:
As of today, please do not send any attachments, unless you e-mail or call
ahead, as I will not open them.
Also,
for those that get viruses sent to them, please be advised that I do not, nor
have I sent any attachments in any communications in the past three years.
We have a warranty
and replacement program that gives priority treatment to those folks with a
firearm that has been placed in either of these two categories.
For those of you that
have gone to your FFL holder and asked them to send us a copy of their FFL, you need to make sure they understand that your real
name (not your SASS alias) is also on the bottom of the form.
The B.A.T.F. (for
some unknown reason) would take a dim view of our using your SASS alias (instead
of your real name) when you order a shotgun from us, and we fill in the buyers
name in our BATF blue book. For this and other reasons, our (hard file and
computer) records have to be squeaky-clean.
It is not necessary
to send us final payment or an FFL until you are notified that the shipment
containing your new shotgun is at the Interstate Arms Corporation warehouse in
Billerica, Mass.
We have several FFL's
now on file without any way of knowing whom the FFL was sent in for, so please
take care of this and this will save us a whole bunch of time and trouble when
it is time for us to ship your new shotgun home to you.
Also - - -
please don't call in asking where you are on any one list, as we are already
swamped with phone calls and e-mails, and this only adds to the current delivery
time.
If you have a change
that needs to be made on your order, (i.e., additional action work or recoil
reduction) or something like
that, then by all means, call us. No problem !
Thanks:

These
projects, (the 99's, 93/97's & 87's) are a major undertaking, and well
worth the physical cost to me to get it all done. I am hoping that people
will understand how difficult it really is and those that know, will want
me to post a response (from time to time) and not go down the same road as
others before me, with promises that should not have been made and cannot
be kept. |
|
|
The Special Edition's are here and are being delivered on a daily basis. We've experienced small problems in the thread sizing of the choke tubes. We had to re-order all new choke tubes...this time (upgrading) to the stainless steel version. We also experienced loose screws inside the carriers, so each Special Edition shotgun has to be torn down and this screw (and others) lock-tited down. This and the fact that we test and tweak each action before delivery has slowed the delivery process. |
|
|
I have found another problem when tweaking and testing. The sear facings on some of the M-97w-20 and 97wcse-18's have been changed by someone at the factory wanting a much stronger trigger pull than the 3 lb. pull specifications I gave them. This problem is a serious one and requires every shotgun to be completely torn down and a new sear with corrected face angle installed and then set up to remove trigger creep. This takes about 3.5 - 4 hours per gun, so please be patient. |
|
|
All in all, these model 87wse-18 (old M-99), 93/9wcse-18 and 87wcse-18 shotguns are a huge improvement over the original Winchester in strength, safety and reliability. The frame milling tolerances are greatly improved along with improvements in safety items, ease of maintenance, hardwood, front sight, metallurgy, barrel thickness, choke tube selections and recoil pads. All resulting in an outstanding shotgun. |
